Meet Kesiah, Cowrie Scholar

Kesiah is currently studying Journalism at the University of Leicester and has recently returned from the USA, studying abroad at Old Dominion University, Virginia. Kesiah has shared her study abroad experience below.

What are some highlights or memorable experiences from your time abroad?

My most memorable moments and experiences whilst studying were the trips I was able to take. I was fortunate to visit four cities in the States as well as visiting Playa del Carmen in Mexico. I know for a fact that I would never have been able to have done this if I didn’t get to do this study abroad and it makes me all the more happier.

Did studying abroad influence your career aspirations or future goals? If so, how?

Studying abroad makes me want to look into career and job opportunities that will allow me to travel abroad; even if it is temporary. There is so much to life outside the one you have grown accustomed to, and experiencing different countries and cultures is something I would love to be a part of my life outside of going on holidays. It not only allows me to experience new life, but also broadens my knowledge of different cultures and languages.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying abroad?

My advice for someone studying abroad is to say ‘yes’. This especially goes out to people that are introverted. For me, travelling almost 4000 miles by myself was an opportunity to come out of my comfort zone and explore a new side to me that I couldn’t uncover at home. It is so easy to say no and want to stay where you are comfortable, but you’ve already done the hard part by moving. Even if you try something new and don’t like it, it’s something that you can say you experienced, and if not, you might find something else that you end up liking about the day. Your life can never change if you keep doing the same things.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Getting a job is also a great way to make friends, meet new people, have new experiences and obviously make a bit of money too! Studying abroad isn’t cheap, especially if you want to travel like I did.
