Meet Lidia, Cowrie Scholar
Lidia is currently studying Marine Biology at the University of Liverpool and has recently returned from the USA, studying abroad at the University of Georgia. Lidia has shared her study abroad experience for future scholars and donors.
What are some highlights or memorable experiences from your time abroad?
Some of the highlights from my time in Georgia include the colourful people I met, the American school spirit (especially on football game days), immersing myself in a new culture, and getting to try out new things such as scuba diving (which I hated!) and an oceanography class (which I loved!). Also the weather was beautiful which was an added bonus.
Did studying abroad influence your career aspirations or future goals? If so, how?
Studying abroad gave me a different perspective of my course. I study Marine Biology, but I got to see the physical and chemical sides of ocean science. This has widened my areas of interest, which I think is important for the future as science can be very interdisciplinary. In regard to my career aspirations, the experience has made me think about continuing research as I found a topic that I would love to do a masters in (and maybe even a PhD someday). I would also consider relocating to a new country in the future as study abroad forced me to grow personally and now this doesn’t seem so scary.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying abroad?
If you’re thinking about studying abroad, I definitely encourage you to do it! Yes, it’s scary at first but you will be fine, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly you adapt. There will be good and bad times, but it’s truly a once in a lifetime experience, and for me it was worth every trial and tribulation. Even if you’re different from the usual demographic that’s able to study abroad, you will find a home if you put yourself out there!
