Promoting Equality & Diversity: Support Us

‘When you change one life, you change many…’

Your support allows us to create opportunities and partnerships across the country which allow talented Black students to pursue a life-changing university degree.

Challenge yourself and your community to raise funds for Cowrie. It’s easy to set up a fundraising page or simply donate sponsorship, royalties or speaker fees. Let us know if you need help!

Regular Giving

Tuition fees are generously covered by partner universities, but donations are key to students’ annual maintenance and studying costs.

Regular donations provide vital, dependable support, ensuring that scholars are able to concentrate on their studies without the added worry of covering basic expenses. They also make it easier to give by spreading your donation out over time. Set up a regular gift.

Corporate Support

Please contact us if you would like to discuss supporting Cowrie’s mission for inclusive education and recruitment, in whatever way suits your organisation. There are also opportunities for volunteering, employee fundraising and networking events. Join our current supporters

How your business support could help:

  • A gift of £1,000 could provide a scholar with specialist textbooks vital to their studies.
  • Support of £8,000 could allow a scholar to cover rent worry-free in their first year of studies.
  • A gift of £9,500 could cover our professional mentorship programme for 20 students over 3 years.
  • A commitment of £25,000 would see one student maintained for their whole three year degree.
Payroll Giving

If you pay tax through PAYE, Payroll Giving offers a way to reduce the cost to you of making regular gifts. If your employer or company/personal pension provider runs a Payroll Giving Scheme, you can authorise them to make the donation from your wages or pension before deducting any tax. This had the added benefit of simplifying the donation process, since the charity does not have to reclaim tax at a later date (as with Gift Aid). Many employers even choose to match employee contributions or support your chosen cause as Charity of the Year. Speak to your company about setting up Payroll Giving monthly donations. Contact us if you need assistance.

Transformational Gifts

If you want to donate to a charity and you are a UK taxpayer, there are a number of schemes available to help you make the most of your donation – please read our Gift Information for Donors.

E.g. 40% taxpayer donates £10,000 – worth £12,500 to Cowrie: Actual cost to donor = £7,500

Grant-making Trusts, Foundations & Funds

Cowrie welcomes conversations with grantmakers interested in learning more about our impact and is delighted to discuss support for core costs (or part thereof), student support, and endowment funding. Please get in touch.

Leave a Lasting Legacy

Gifts in wills are a wonderful way to provide for your loved ones and to help the causes that are important to you. By remembering The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation in your will, you can continue to support transformative education long into the future.

More information about gifts in wills:

There are different types of bequests, from a specific sum of money to a percentage of the estate. Legacies are a tax-efficient way of making a donation, since gifts to charities are exempt from inheritance tax. Your solicitor should help you to write or amend your will.

The Foundation is also very happy to discuss specific requests or contact from executors – please get in touch.

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation’ is a UK registered charity, #1191471.

Your donation can be worth 25% more to The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation – at no cost to you.

The UK Gift Aid scheme allows donors who pay income or capital gains tax to add Gift Aid: Cowrie can then claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give – at no cost to you.

  • E.g. Donation worth £900 to Cowrie = £20/month + Gift Aid x 36 months
    (Cost to donor = £720)
  • E.g. Donation worth £5,000 to Cowrie = £4,000 + Gift Aid
    (Cost to donor = £4,000)

If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment tax returns or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code. Your donations will qualify as long as they’re not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year.

We are dedicated to ethical, transparent fundraising activity and to protecting your data.

“We chose the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation because we felt that its aim was excellent and achievable.”

– Rosemary Mecklenburgh, Legacy Executor
